To
paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of our death have been greatly
exaggerated. BAGeL Radio is still on the air and streaming, now via a
different service. Apologies to those of you who had the BAGeL Radio
stream bookmarked in your player and/or browser windows. The stream URL
has changed. For now please use:

Did you see what the California legislative Republicans almost did? They almost brought the 8th largest economy in the world to it's knees. They almost caused great harm to the many already suffering Californians. The Governator tried to add a 9% tax to veterinary services. Sorry, Fido, no shots for you this year...we can't afford to take you to the vet!
Anyway, today's show will feature new music from Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Brooklyn, NY), U2 (Dublin, Ireland), Mirah (Portland, OR), These Are Powers (Chicago, IL), The Soundtrack of Our Lives (Göteborg, Sweden), Mumiy Troll (Vladivostok, Russia), Telepathe (Brooklyn, NY), Everything Absent Or Distorted (Denver, CO), The Takeover UK (Pittsburgh, PA), The Laureates (Chicago, IL), Marissa Nadler (Boston, MA), Youth Group (Sydney, Australia), and Lucky Jesus (San Francisco, CA).

For you Bay Area listeners there are a couple of good shows this weekend: tonight at the Hotel Utah it's Raised By Robots and Supervinos VTO (tickets here), then tomorrow night at Bottom of the Hill it's The Meat Puppets, Trainwreck Riders, and The Shaky Hands (a troika of BAGeL Radio bands!), and I'll be there DJing, so buy your tickets now (no fee!) while they are still available.
As alluded to in the title of this post, your humble narrator is looking for work. Fast. If you have any leads on SF Bay Area job openings that you think I would rock, please do let me know. Internet radio, music librarian, event coordinator, software quality assurance, helping to ease willing septuagenarians into the computer age...you name it, I'll consider it. Thanks.
Also, if you know anyone who would benefit from learning how to start a blog, podcast, and internet radio station, and learn how to maximize the synergies between them, please let them know that my class, "Blogs, Podcasts, and Internet Radio" starts up again on 2/7 at San Francisco State University. Sign up!
As for today's show, I must admit I am very psyched about several of the things we will be debuting. "480 Minutes" will feature new music today from Morrissey (Los Angeles, CA), Animal Collective (Baltimore, MD), Lily Allen (London, England), The Wrens (Secaucus, New Jersey), Now Now Every Children (Minneapolis, MN), A.C. Newman (Vancouver, Canada), Andrew Bird (Chicago, IL), Gemma Hayes (Dublin, Ireland), Vulture Whale (Birmingham, AL), Kyle Andrews (Nashville, TN), Freshkills (New York, NY), Sparks (Los Angeles, CA), and several cover versions of pop hits by cool bands including My Brightest Diamond, Robbers On High Street, and Frightened Rabbit.

Good
morning and welcome to the 2009 inaugural edition of "480 Minutes."
2009 has been anything but boring in these first couple of weeks, and
I'm excited to get back on the air to play you new stuff and perhaps
chat a bit about why Sanjay "Dr. No" Gupta should not be our next
Surgeon General.
While I still have your attention, it is my
pleasure to announce the BAGeL Radio Half Dozenth Birthday Party. Yes,
it's true, the "Little Station That Could" turns 6 years old on 2/1,
and to celebrate we're having a party our favorite venue, The Bottom of
the Hill, on Saturday 2/7 featuring:
Birdmonster
Railcars
Ricky Lee Robinson
As for today's show, it will feature new music today from Chris T-T (Brighton/London, England), Lonely, Dear (Jönköping, Sweden), Foreign Orange (Portland, OR), Golden Error (Brooklyn, NY), Willoughby (Los Angeles, CA), DJ Signify (Brooklyn, NY), Fires Of Rome (Brooklyn, NY), Padre Pio (Brooklyn, NY), Black Peter Group (New York), and Common (Chicago, IL).

News: Sarah Palin, John McCain's choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, has international relations experience because (get this) she's from Alaska, which is the closest state to Russia. This according to FOX News. If her expertise on Russia is so great, why didn't she warn us about the recent invasion of Georgia? I wonder if one of Palin's aids presented her with a "Putin Determined To Strike Georgia" memo and she decided it was not as worthy of her attention as trying to get books banned. I mean, I know that whole Russia thing is The Secretary of State's job and supposed area of expertise, but Condoleeza Rice houses her shoe collection all the way over there in D.C., right? How could she have known?
During their RNC speeches Mike Huckabee and John McCain talked about change so much you'd think it had been other party in the White House destroying the country these last eight long years. Pious Mike finished up by relating the story of a high school teacher explaining to her class that their classroom desks were paid for by the sacrifices of war veterans. Gee, Mike, I hate to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that those desks and books and school buildings and teacher salaries and roads and bridges are all paid for by those things that you demonize: taxes. The AP also did some fact-checking of the claims made in some RNC speeches and found that they "stretched the truth" and Minister Huckabee actually let loose with a "whopper" (which Merriam Webster defines as "an extravagant or monstrous lie"). I know, shocking, Right?

I am looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow (8/30) at the BAGeL Radio rockshowdancepartyhybrid event featuring Scissors For Lefty, Head Like A Kite, and DJ Ted from BAGeL Radio DJing at The Rickshaw Stop. Tune into "480 Minutes" today from 9a.m to 5p.m. Pacific Time to win tickets, or buy them from the Rickshaw website.
And if that's not enough dancing for you, next Wednesday (9/2) is The Rumble, and this one will feature an intimate mini-set by one of BAGeL Radio's favorite local bands, Magic Bullets, and a guest DJ set by the awesome Omar of Popscene.
Today's show will feature an afternoon visit from Birdmonster who may or may not play an in-studio acoustic mini-set, that has (still!) yet to be confirmed, but they are always fun to have on the show to chat with and help pick songs. I expect they will be on the air beginning around 12:30 pm Pacific Time.
New music today will include songs by The Verve (Manchester, England), TV On The Radio (New York, NY), Bound Stems (Chicago, IL), The Pack A.D. News: Former President Bill Clinton nailed it in his Democratic Convention speech: in 1992 the Republicans branded brash Bill too young and inexperienced for the job, and what followed his election were 8 years of peace and prosperity. Now the Republicans are saying that Barack Obama is too young and inexperienced for the job. I hope they are as accurate this time as they were 16 years ago. Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden's speech was pretty good, too, as were those of Al Gore and even John Kerry. The line of the week, however, went to Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer who quipped, "We simply can't drill our way to energy independence. If you drilled everywhere, if you drilled in all of John McCain's backyards, even the ones he doesn't know he has."
Next Saturday (8/30) is The BAGeL Radio rockshowdancepartyhybrid featuring Scissors For Lefty, Head Like A Kite, and DJ Ted from BAGeL Radio DJing. Are you ready? I'm not. I've got The Outside Lands Festival this weekend, then I can start to prepare for the booty shaking madness happening Saturday August 30th at The Rickshaw Stop. Tune into "480 Minutes" on Fridays from 9a.m to 5p.m. Pacific Time to win tickets, or buy them from the venue website.
New music today will include songs by Okkervil River (Austin, TX), Woven (Los Angeles, CA), Ezra Furman & The Harpoons (Chicago, IL), Beck (Los Angeles, CA), The Born Again Floozies (Indiannapolis, IN), Lykke Li (Stockholm, Sweden), ModoFac (Glencoe, IL), Pop Levi (Los Angeles, CA), The Stills (Montreal, Canada), Plushgun (Brooklyn, NY), Ra Ra Riot (Syracuse, NY), and Amanda Palmer (Boston, MA). Oh, yeah, and a new Oasis (Manchester, England) song, too.
Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, is rebroadcast starting at 7 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.
