OK,
we're back, and there's so much good stuff to get to, I don't even know
where to begin. That 500-song playlist I've been panning through ended
up being more like 700 songs as I found other things to listen to, and
there's still a backlog of CDs I need to get to, but there was some
quality in there, let me tell you.
As such today's program will contain a host of (over 60!) never-before-heard on BAGeL Radio music including new Wolf Parade (Montreal, Canada), The Notwist (Munich, Germany), The Cute Lepers (Seattle, WA), Okay (Berkeley, CA), Ladytron (Liverpool, UK), Herman Dune (Sweden), The Charlatans (Manchester, UK), Centro-Matic (Denton, TX), The Chap (London, UK), Cineplexx (Barcelona, Spain), Crayonsmith (Dublin, Ireland), The Dimes (Portland, OR), The Dudley Corporation (Dublin, Ireland), Foxboro Hot Tubs (Oakland, CA), The Gang (Brooklyn, NY), The Harbours (San Francisco, CA), Jason Webley (Seattle, WA), Jeff Wagner's Tunnel Of Love (San Francisco, CA.), Little Beirut (Portland, OR), Mono In VCF (Tacoma, WA), My Morning Jacket (Louisville, KY), Ricky Lee Robinson (Oakland, CA), The Saturday Knights (Seattle, WA), Setting Sun (Hudson Valley, NY), Sigur Ros (Reykjavík, Iceland), Sloan (Toronto, Canada), Southeast Engine (Athens, OH), Sybris (Chicago, IL), Taylor Hollingsworth (Birmingham, AL), The Weeks (Jackson, MS), and 60 Watt Kid (San Francisco, CA).
Today listeners will have a chance to win a DVD copy of the acclaimed film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, Control, and we continue our ticket giveaway for for The Download Festival at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The July 19th lineup now includes The Jesus & Mary Chain and Gang Of Four to go along with Atmosphere & Brother Ali, Brand New, Mute Math, Yeasayer, Sia, M83, Mates of State, The Whigs, William Fitzsimmons, Cut Copy, Datarock, Flosstradamus, RJD2, Duke Spirit, Tapes n Tapes, Blitzen Trapper, Louis XIV, Airborne Toxic Event, and De Novo Dahl, amongst others. From SF Weekly:
Best Internet DJ (2008)
Ted Leibowitz, Bagel Radio
These days, music fans have way too many people clamoring for their attention. MP3 blogs, Pandora, and weekly newspapers (oops!) all tug at listeners' elbows, insisting their opinions are the most reliable. That's why it's nice to have someone you can trust, like Ted Leibowitz of local Internet station BAGeL Radio. For the last four years, Leibowitz has been broadcasting from his S.F. home, carefully selecting the best in current and old-school guitar-driven rock. He occasionally peppers his shows with some hip-hop and electronica as well, but it is the rock in which he excels. During his eight-hour live show every Friday, he culls tracks from his ever-growing collection, playing everything from local upstarts Empty Rooms, buzz band Vampire Weekend, and elder statesmen Pixies and Rolling Stones. Thanks to Leibowitz, listening to radio is fun again.
It's time for the weekly marathon radio program in which you find the albums you are going to buy and listen to all week next week. It happens all the time. You'll see. Next week (Friday, May 30th) will be even worse because besides new songs the show will also contain a countdown of the top songs and albums of 2008 so far, which, of course, you will have to own. Get ready to hock those Kenny G. CDs, you're going to need some quick cash.

Please tune in to "480 Minutes" today and every Friday. The show runs live from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time, then is rebroadcast starting at 7 p.m., then twice more on Saturday. On Saturday night at midnight we return to regular BAGeL Radio programming.

According
to a study released last Tuesday by two nonprofit journalism groups,
Dubyah and his top aides "publicly made 935 false statements about the
security risk posed by Iraq in the two years following September 11,
2001."
The overview of the study says:
White House Press Secretary Dana Perino's defense? "They [the study] only looked at members of the administration." Huh? What? Is the official party line that if other people lied, it's OK that Dubyah, Vice President Dick Cheney, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice lied to the world? In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003.
By the way, Dana, those other people in Congress and around the world were somewhat less culpable because they did not initiate and methodically propagate the lies, they were just repeating the lies of the administration. Their lies were based on the false and misleading evidence cherry picked and trumpeted by the administration.
You see, back then folks trusted the executive branch of the US government. Based on past presidents, they probably thought to themselves, "Well, this sounds like bullshit, this looks like bullshit, this smells like bullshit (and is Colin Powell really pointing to finger-paintings as incontrovertible evidence?!?)...but this is the leader of the free world we're talking about here. He wouldn't just make this shit up, right? He'd make certain his information was proven beyond the shadow of a doubt before launching a trillion dollar war against a terrorist-free nation that had nothing to do with 9/11."
You'd think this might make neocon apologists at FOX and MSGOP question the administration's more recent assertions about the security risk posed by Iran, but they are not likely to call attention to the study in part because it also calls them out: "Much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq."
The Top Five Liars:
Dubyah: 260
Powell: 244
Rumsfeld: 109
Fleischer: 109
Wolfowitz: 85
Read about it at CNN.com, or better yet read Mark Morford's take on it here.
In a speech at MIDEM’s first International Manager Summit, U2's manager Paul McGuinness asserted that your Internet Service Provider should pay his band and their label part of their profits because the service ISPs provide allows people to illegally share music.
While this strategy to crack down on file sharing may be marginally better than the one employed by the RIAA (suing housewives, kids, grandmothers, and dead people), it still grossly misplaces fault and reassigns responsibility for the mess that is the recored music industry today.
Based on this speech, it would be hypocritical for Mr. McGuinness to not also champion the (equally absurd) idea that labels/artists should pay a surcharge to ISPs for the bandwidth used for each legal music download from iTunes, Amazon, whathaveyou.
I'm surprised to hear something this shortsighted blaring out of the U2 camp. Who do they think they are, Metallica?
Read McGuinness's (lengthy) MIDEM speech.
